On Halloween evening, all the lanterns in the neighborhood woke up and began to glow. Luma woke up too, but she kept her light very, very small.

"My glow is too tiny," Luma whispered. "Nobody will even see me." She pulled her little light in until it was no bigger than a firefly.

Down the street, the parade was starting. Big lanterns lifted their heads and shone like bright balloons. Luma peeked out from behind a fence.

"Come on, Luma!" called a tall red lantern. Luma wanted to join them. But she looked at her small glow and hid behind the fence again.

So Luma watched the parade go by. She saw golden lanterns, silver lanterns, and one lantern shaped like a star. Everyone's light was bigger than hers.

When the parade turned the corner, the street grew quiet. Luma was all alone with her tiny glow. Then she heard a very small sound. "Mew... mew..."

A little kitten stood by the wall. It was gray and fluffy, with wide, worried eyes. "I can't find my home," the kitten said.

"I don't know the way," said Luma. "But you can walk with me." So the kitten stepped close, right into Luma's small pool of light.

"Your light feels warm," said the kitten. "I'm not scared when I'm next to it." Luma blinked. Nobody had ever said that about her glow before.

They walked down the quiet street together. Luma held her light steady, and the kitten followed it, step by step, past the dark bushes.

At the corner, the kitten stopped. "I think my house is near the tall tree." Luma lifted her glow as high as she could. It was small, but it was just enough to show the way.

Soon they saw a small blue door under the tall tree. "That's my house!" cried the kitten, and it ran to the steps.

The kitten's family came out, one, two, three. "Thank you, little lantern," they said. "Your light brought our kitten home."

Luma felt her glow grow bigger all by itself. Not because she tried harder, but because she was happy.

Then Luma heard music. The parade was coming back around the corner, and the tall red lantern waved to her. "There you are! Come shine with us!"

This time Luma did not hide. She stepped out and glowed beside the big lanterns, and the kitten waved from its window.

The whole street was full of light, big and small. And every single glow was needed, because every single glow helped someone find the way home.
