Leo and the Wind That Would Not Wait

Leo lives in a town where the wind is always in a hurry, so he builds a bright yellow bicycle and tries to catch it. After chasing the wind through town and meadow, he meets an old woman who flies kites and teaches him that the wind cannot be held—only followed, felt, and shared. Leo then helps a younger child named Mia build a new kite, and together they run with the wind pulling them forward.

Leo lived in a small town where the wind was always in a hurry. It slipped under doors, rattled the shutters, and ran off down the street before Leo could even wave.

"I want to catch the wind," Leo said. So he carried tools into the yard and built a bicycle. He painted it bright yellow, so he would never lose it in a hurry.

The bicycle had a silver bell, a basket in front, and wheels that spun like two round suns. Leo climbed on and rang the bell. Ting-ting! "Wind, here I come!"

Down the street Leo rode. The wind blew a paper hat off a post and sent it tumbling. Leo pedaled fast, but the hat flew over the rooftops and was gone.

Out of town Leo rode, into a wide green meadow. The wind ran through the tall grass and made it bow in long, rolling waves.

Leo pushed harder. His yellow bicycle flashed between the flowers. "I almost have you!" he called. But the grass stopped bowing, and the wind was already somewhere else.

Then Leo heard a sound like a flag flapping. Beside the river, a line of little kites danced above the water. An old woman stood holding the strings.

"Are you chasing the wind too?" Leo asked. The old woman smiled. "I stopped chasing it long ago," she said. "Now I only follow it."

"But I built a whole bicycle to catch it!" said Leo. "If I can't catch the wind, what is my bicycle for?"

The old woman handed him a string. "Feel that?" she said. "The wind is pulling right now. You cannot hold the wind in your hand, but you can follow it, feel it, and share it."

Leo held the string and felt the tug. It was soft, then strong, then soft again, like someone breathing beside him. He laughed out loud.

He rode up the grassy hill beside the river, and this time he did not race. He let the wind push his back and lift his hair.

At the top of the hill stood a younger child named Mia, holding a broken stick and looking sad. "My kite flew away," she said.

"Then let's build a new one," said Leo. He opened his basket and took out paper, sticks, and string.

They folded the paper into a bright shape and tied it with careful knots. Leo tied the last knot and held it up. "It needs one more thing," he said. "Wind."

Leo and Mia ran down the hill together, and the new kite leaped up behind them. It climbed higher and higher, pulling the string tight.

The old woman watched from the river and waved. Leo waved back with one hand while the other hand held the string.

Mia laughed and ran, and Leo ran beside her. The wind filled the kite, the kite pulled the string, and the string pulled both of them forward.

On the way home, Leo's yellow bicycle rolled slowly beside him. The wind followed behind, nudging the basket and turning the silver bell. Ting-ting!

"You were right," Leo told the old woman the next day. "I could never catch the wind. But I can follow it, feel it, and share it."

So every afternoon, Leo rode his bright yellow bicycle to the hill. Sometimes he raced the wind. Sometimes he just let it push him. And every time, he brought a friend along.
